Watch | Worst review ever? Umpire almost breaks into laughter on Rohit Sharma's horrendous DRS call

SportsTak

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma took the first review of the Ahmedabad Test but it seemed unlikely that he was convinced it would hit the stumps. As the hawkeye showed that the ball was missing the stumps by a fair margin, Usman Khawaja, Ravindra Jadeja, few other Indian players and on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough struggled to stop themselves break into laughter.

The incident happened in the 128th over of Australia's first innings. As Indian bowlers remained unbeaten for two sessions on the trot, they wanted to see the back of Khawaja who was batting on 160 then.

Khawaja padded a delivery that was pitched way outside the off stump and it did not look like it would go on to hit the stumps. Surprisingly, Rohit made the DRS call and the umpire reluctantly sent it upstairs.

Usually, if the batter pads the ball away and does not offer a shot the umpire's call does not come into play. But the replay showed that the ball would not have gone on to hit the stumps. Even the fielders did not seem too interested as they knew that it was a poor DRS call.

After seeing the replay, Indian players had a smile on their face. Khawaja too had a light moment as soon as he saw it on the big screen.

It amused commentators Ravi Shastri, Matthew Hayden and Dinesh Karthik. The wicketkeeper-batter even took a dig as he said, "They (India) wanted to check whether the third umpire was awake".

After the appeal, Khawaja added 20 more runs to his score. He scored 180 runs from 422 balls including 21 fours. He shared a record-breaking 208-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Cameron Green who scored his maiden Test ton.

Khawaja was dismissed by Axar Patel. It turned out to be the left-arm spinner’s only scalp of the innings. After Khawaja show, tailenders Nathan Lyon (34) and Todd Murphy (41) shared a 70-run partnership for the ninth wicket to frustrate Indian bowlers and post a mammoth total of 480 in the first innings. In reply, India scored 36 runs from the remaining 10 overs of the day.
