Ignored from T20I squad for 5 years, Bangladesh pacer breaks Shakib Al Hasan's 7-year-old BPL record with 5/12 but almost loses match with bat

Bangladesh pacer Abu Hider registered a record-breaking five-wicket haul for Rangpur Riders against Fortune Barishal in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024. Hider’s 5 for 12 is the best bowling display by a Bangladesh bowler in the history of BPL. He broke Shakib Al Hasan’s record of 5 for 16 was created in the 2017 edition of the tournament. 
 

He also became the first Bangladesh bowler and third overall to take a five-wicket haul for Rangpur Riders. Overall, Hider registered the fourth-best bowling figures in BPL history. The top spot belongs to Mohammad Amir who took 6 for 17 in the 2020 edition. 

 

The left-arm pacer made his last T20I appearance in 2018. He has played three 13 T20Is and picked up six wickets.
 

Hider causes a batting collapse

After Fortune Barishal captain Tamim Iqbal won the toss, he opted to bat first at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Shakib dismissed Iqbal for 20-ball 33. Then Tom Banton stitched a 72-run partnership with in-form Kyle Mayers. The partnership was broken by Jimmy Neesham in the 12th over. Banton departed after a 24-ball 26. 
 

Hider then struck thrice in the 13th over to send Mushfiqur Rahim (5), Soumya Sarkar (0), and Mayers (27-ball 46) packing. He dismissed Mahmudullah (9) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3) as well. Fortune Barishal suffered a batting collapse as they went from 110/1 to 129/8. But they managed to post 151/9 on the board.

Rangpur Riders’ narrow one-wicket win

In the run chase, Mayers got rid of opener Mominul Haque for a two-ball duck. Brandon King got Rangpur Riders off to a flying start with a 22-ball 45. He was dismissed by Miraz. Shakib fell after a 15-ball 29 to Miraz as well. 

Mahedi Hasan and skipper Nurul Hasan was dismissed cheaply as well. Rangpur Riders were cruising towards the target but the Obed McCoy dismissed Tom Moores (17), Neesham (28), and Dwaine Pretorius (13). Hider came in to bat and faced as many as five dot balls. He was dismissed by Mayers in the penultimate over. But in the final over, no.11 batter Hasan Mahmud led Rangpur Riders home with a boundary with three balls to spare. 
 

Rangpur Riders won by one wicket. This was their ninth win of the season. They have already qualified for the playoffs.
