Gujarat Titans' new recruit emulates Chris Gayle as he whacks 8 sixes in 80-ball 113 to end West Indies's 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh

Middle-order batter Sherfane Rutherford's maiden ODI century led West Indies to a five-wicket win over Bangladesh at Warner Park, St Kitts. Rutherford smashed eight sixes in his 80-ball 113 as West Indies chased down 295 with 14 balls to spare. This was West Indies' first win against Bangladesh in ODIs after 11 losses. 

Rutherford became the fourth West Indies batter to score a century in successful run chase against Bangladesh. Others on the list are Shai Hope (146 not out), Marlon Samuels (126) and Chris Gayle (104 not out).

Three fifties help Bangladesh set competitive target

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz won the toss and opted to bat first. Soumya Sarkar who scored a match-winning fifty in Global Super League departed for an 18-ball 19 to Alzarri Joseph. Romario Shepherd bowled a wicket-maiden as Litton Das returned to the dressing room for a single-digit score. Miraz was dropped early in the innings. Meanwhile, Tanzid Hasan hit a few sixes and reached his third ODI fifty from 46 balls. Miraz's catch was dropped again in the middle overs. Joseph came back into the attack and dismissed Tanzid for a run-a-ball 60.

In the 28th over, Miraz reached his half-century from 71 balls. Afif Hossain took the attacking route against Shepherd and paid the price for it for a 29-ball 28. Jayden Seales ended Miraz's stay at the crease in the 38th over. He scored 74 runs from 101 deliveries. Jaker Ali and Mahmudullah pushed the scoring rate in the slog overs. Mahmudullah reached his fifty from just 43 balls In the final over, Jaker was dismissed by Shepherd for a 40-ball 48. Bangladesh managed to post a fighting total of 294/6.

Skipper keeps hope alive

West Indies' run chase got off to a steady start. Tanzim Hasan Sakib trapped Brandon King in front of the stumps for a single-digit score. In the next over, Nahid Rana dismissed Evin Lewis lbw for a 31-ball 16. Hope and Keacy Carty looked to get the innings back on track but the latter struggled to score freely. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain got the wicket of Carty in the 22nd over. He scored 21 runs from 37 balls.In the 27th over, skipper Hope reached his fifty from 60 balls. 

Rutherford's blazing ton takes Windies home

The required run rate was climbing but Rutherford accelerated in the middle overs. He took on Rana and reached his fifty from 48 balls. Hope looked to attack too but lost his wicket to Miraz for an 88-ball 86. In the last 10 overs, West Indies needed 83 runs. With six wickets in hand, Rutherford and Justin Greaves went after the bowlers. Rutherford cleared the ropes with ease. In the 47th over, Rutherford reached his maiden ODI hundred with six overthrows. He followed it up with two consecutive sixes against Sarkar. The southpaw took 77 balls to reach three figures. Rutherford could not finish the run chase and turned out to be Sarkar's consolation wicket. Greaves scored the winning runs as West Indies ended losing streak of 11 ODIs.

Rutherford joins IPL 2022 winners

Rutherford who hasn't played an Indian Premier League (IPL) match since 2022 was roped in by Gujarat Titans (GT) for Rs 2.6 crore after a bidding tussle with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the mega auction.
