Christmas has come early for Matthew Wade as the Australian batter is enjoying the summer with some scintillating batting performances. On Saturday (December 11), the Hobart Hurricane captain scored a blistering 93 off just 46 deliveries to put his side in a strong position as the Islanders ended with a score of 213/2 in a Big Bash League (BBL) match.
Wade came out with all guns blazing against Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The left-handed batter was in a destructive mood and hammered the opposition bowlers ruthlessly. Eventually, the 33-year old batsman was dismissed by England’s Tom Curran. Wade went down the ground but failed to play the shot with sheer conviction. Eventually he could not middle it for the distance as it turned out to be an easy catch for Jordan Silk.
Wade's innings included nine boundaries and five over boundaries with a strike rate of 202.
Wade who was part of the Australian T20 World Cup-winning squad was instrumental in the semifinal against Pakistan as he scored three consecutive sixes in that crucial encounter to secure victory for the Aussies. The wicket-keeper batsman was slightly unlucky after he was not selected for the Ashes team after Tim Paine decided to withdraw from the squad. Alex Carey was instead drafted into the team ahead of the experienced Wade.
Wade’s Hobart side is yet to win a match in the ongoing BBL but they will have plenty of encouragement with the side posting a total of more than 213. Wade will be optimistic in the coming days as he hopes for a return to the Test side. For now though, Wade and his men will try to push for their first BBL title.
