Jos Buttler has resigned from England's captaincy after the team failed to perform in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He captained the team for the last time during the England vs South Africa clash of the mega event in Lahore. England were among the first team who ruled out of the mega event.

England's Champions Trophy campaign ended without a win as they lost their opener clash against the arch-rivals Australia. Afghanistan defeated England in their second group stage clash. In their third league stage clash, South Africa defeated England to seal their berth for the semifinal.

"It’s with great sadness that I have decided to step down as England white ball captain. Leading your country is an immense honour and something I have and always will be very proud to have done. The results are clear and obvious and it is the right time for me and the team to make this decision. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, staff and England fans who have supported me throughout my time as captain but most importantly I would like to thank my wife Louise and my family. You have been unwavering pillars of support throughout the highs and lows of the job and I cannot thank you enough ❤️ onto the next chapter …" wrote Buttler in his social media post.

Buttler-led England won the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia but his performances have dipped down after that win. England also failed to retain their dominance in T20 or ODI World Cup crowns. Last year, Australian coach Matthew Mott stepped down after England’s T20 World Cup semifinal exit against eventual champion India, with former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum tasked with reviving the country’s limited-overs fortunes
