Star Indian opener Shubman Gill said he does not allow his job as India's vice-captain to affect his batting when he is fielding. Prior to the England series, Gill was granted the role and since then, his performance has improved due to the increased responsibility. In his last four games, Gill has struck two fifties and two hundreds. In the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, he got a century.
Shubman Gill reveals his role during matches
Gill has lived up to coach Gautam Gambhir's expectations that he will do well at the position. Prior to the India vs. Pakistan match, the 25-year-old stated that he constantly tries to engage with the bowlers on the field, a task that India skipper Rohit Sharma has given him. According to Gill, he wants to ensure that the bowling strategies are correctly executed throughout the match.
"Whenever I am on the field, whenever we are out there, I try and talk to the bowlers. It's not easy for them in this heat to think right. Rohit bhai has given me the responsibility to talk to the bowlers whenever I am standing in mid-on and mid-off. I want to make sure the bowling plans are followed and I try to keep talking to the bowlers," said Gill.
Gill stated that he wants to act like a batter and give his team his best effort while batting.
"While batting, I don't think about the responsibility. Whenever, I am batting, I want to think as a batter and do the best for my team," said Gill.
Gill on Pakistan clash
Speaking about the match against Pakistan, Gill stated that despite their dismal start to the season, the team is not underestimating its bitter enemies. According to Gill, it is critical that the squad maintain focus and give it their all.
"It's a big match, but the biggest match is the final that the team plays. We have been playing good cricket. By no means, we are going to take them as a lesser side. It's important for us to stay switched on and bring our A--game tomorrow," said Gill.
India and Pakistan will clash against each other in Dubai, on February 23 (Sunday).
