The Indian contingent were afflicted by a major Covid-19 scare after Olympic medallist PV Sindhu was forced into temporary isolation after certain deviation in the first round of RT-PCR test upon reaching Birmingham on Thursday, July 22. The former world champion’s second test came negative and further was allowed to join the team members at the Games Village. The two-time Olympic medallist was told to not come in contact with her badminton contingent till her second result came out.
But ahead of the events kicking off on July 29, India's Chef de Mission Rajesh Bhandari has assured fans that all the required precautions are being taken, "All teams are practising right now — The hockey (men's and women's), boxing, squash, etc. There is always a threat of Covid-19 but all the precautions are being taken. No one is scared (of a Covid outbreak). All of them are busy with their practices. We are very satisfied with the practice sessions."
As per the CWG 2022 rules, all athletes must undergo an RT-PCR test for detecting Covid-19 at least 72 hours before their arrival in the UK. Then, upon reaching, there will be another test in Birmingham.
The United Kingdom government has removed all travel restrictions for people travelling to the country for the Games.
India's 215-member strong contingent will participate in the 2022 CWG in Birmingham. The multi-sport event starts today in Birmingham. will take place from July 28 to August 8, 2022. The contingent won 66 medals in the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast. This time the target is at least 75-80 Medals by the Indian squad.
