Jos Buttler introduced Saqib Mahmood into the attack in the second over, and he immediately made an impact, dismissing Sanju Samson (1) with his very first ball.  Samson fell victim to a short ball strategy. Mahmood then struck again on his second delivery, sending the in-form Tilak Varma back to the pavilion for a golden duck. The over culminated with the dismissal of Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav for a duck, continuing his recent struggles with form.

Mahmood's opening over, his first of the tour, became an incredibly rare triple-wicket maiden, leaving India in a difficult position.  This performance etched his name into the record books, making him the first player globally to achieve this feat against India in a men's T20I. He is also the first English bowler ever to record a triple-wicket maiden against any team in the shortest format of the game.

Mahmood's triple-wicket maiden over is also tied for the quickest (in terms of overs bowled) in T20I history.  He shares this record with former West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor, who achieved the same feat against South Africa in the second over of their innings in Gqeberha in 2007.

Despite Saqib Mahmood's sensational over, India recovered strongly thanks to Abhishek Sharma (29 off 19) and Rinku Singh (30 off 26). Shivam Dube then took the attack to Adil Rashid, ensuring India maintained momentum in the middle overs. Dube and Hardik Pandya forged a crucial 87-run partnership, with Dube scoring 53 off 34 balls and Pandya contributing 53 off 33. Mahmood finished with figures of 3-35 as India posted a total of 181. In their chase, England could only manage 166, losing the match and the series by 15 runs
