In a double delight for India, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj have dethroned Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi to become World no.1 respectively in the latest ODI rankings realeased by ICC.
With this Gill has become only the fourth Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to become the no.1 batter in the ODI rankings. Meanwhile, Siraj also jumped two places up to uproot Afridi from top spot and yet again rule the charts.
India's star opener Gill recently played an impressive knock of 92 to help India rock Sri Lanka in their World Cup clash few days back. So far Gill has amassed 219 runs in the tournament after missing the initial two matched battling with dengue.
In contrast, Babar has garnered just 282 runs in the World Cup 2023 as his poor form led to a drop of six rating points, hence the Pakistan skipper tumbled to second place in the standing after topping the charts for more than two years.
Gill isn't the only Indian decorating the ICC's ODI batting rankings as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma too are plying their trade in the top 10. While Gill has been rewarded with no.1 ranking for the very first time, Kohli too rocketed to fourth spot from seventh after his historical 49th ODI ton against South Africa. Kohli is just one point behind South Africa's Quinton de Kock, who has amassed a whopping 543 runs in the World Cup 2023 riding on four tons.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has made a remarkable leap up the ODI batter rankings, ascending 17 places to take the 18th spot. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman has climbed three places to 11th, and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran has risen six spots, finding himself at 12th.
Siraj tops the bowling chart
The ODI bowler rankings have undergone a substantial turnaround since the World Cup commenced, with Indian bowlers making significant strides. Four Indian players now feature in the top 10, thanks to the team's exceptional performance in the initial phase of the 50-over tournament.
Siraj has moved up two positions to reclaim the top spot as the number one ODI bowler. His compatriots are not far behind, with Kuldeep Yadav ascending three places to fourth, Jasprit Bumrah climbing three spots to eighth, and Mohammed Shami making a notable jump of seven places to break into the top 10 at 10th.
Also, South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has also improved his standing, moving up to second place, while Australia’s Adam Zampa has made a six-place advance to sit at third in the rankings. Shaheen Afridi, who was the top-ranked ODI bowler last week, has fallen to the fifth position, now sharing the spot with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood.
Sri Lanka’s pace bowler Dilshan Madushanka, the leading wicket-taker at the World Cup thus far, has soared 31 places to 45th among ODI bowlers. Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja has climbed eight places to 19th, and South Africa’s Marco Jansen has also made significant headway, rising nine places to tie at 24th.
Meanwhile, in the all-rounders' ranking, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan holds onto the number one spot despite an early withdrawal from the World Cup due to injury. Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has risen two places to sixth after his crucial performance that led to victory against Afghanistan in Mumbai.
