In a thrilling face off mighty India will take on five-time holders champions Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 final at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, Sunday. In the event of the final match being abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances, both India and Australia could be declared joint winners, as per the World Cup rule book. This possibility arises from the lack of a definitive outcome due to the match's interruption.
On Thursday, Australia secured their spot in the final by defeating South Africa by three wickets in the second semi-final at Kolkata's Eden Gardens. Prior to that, Rohit Sharma's men maintained their undefeated streak in the World Cup by defeating New Zealand by 70 runs in the first semi-final.
In addition to the original matchday, the ICC has allocated a reserve day for the final to ensure a definitive outcome besides extra time.
World Cup 2023 Final Rules: Determining the Champion
If India vs Australia's World Cup final gets abandoned or no result can be determined by the end of the reserve day, both teams will be declared joint winners. This outcome signifies that there is no clear victor due to the match's interruption. If the India vs Australia World Cup final ends in a tie, a Super Over will be played to determine the winner. This one-over shootout will provide an opportunity for one team to establish dominance. In the unlikely scenario that the Super Over also ends in a tie, additional Super Overs will be played until a clear winner emerges. In the extremely rare case that weather or other unforeseen circumstances prevent the completion of the Super Over, even on the reserve day, both India and Australia will be declared joint winners. This decision ensures that neither team is unfairly disadvantaged due to factors beyond their control.
Reserve Day Regulations for the Final
In the event that the India-Australia final match is interrupted or halted on Sunday due to rain or any other unforeseen circumstance, and both teams are unable to complete a minimum of 20 overs, the reserve day provision will come into effect, allowing the match to resume on Monday. The game will recommence from the exact point where the last ball was played on Sunday. If the match remains tied at the conclusion of the reserve day, a Super Over will be played to determine the winner.
Extra time Rule
An additional 120 minutes of playing time has been allocated for both November 19 and November 20 (reserve day) to ensure the completion of the World Cup 2023 final match. In the event of an interruption during the game, the umpires have the authority to utilise this extra time provision and, if necessary, reduce the number of overs to achieve a definitive outcome on that day. To guarantee a result on the scheduled day, each team must be given the opportunity to bat for a minimum of 20 overs.
