Indian cricket icon Harbhajan Singh expressed scepticism about Pakistan's prospects in the current ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. Pakistan is set to kick off their campaign against the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on October 6.
During a discussion hosted by ESPNcricinfo, Harbhajan pointed out that Pakistan's spin-bowling all-rounder, Shadab Khan, seems off his game. He noted that Shadab appears content conceding 50-60 runs without taking wickets. In Shadab's recent performances, he has managed only two wickets in his last four ODI appearances for Pakistan.
Harbhajan remarked, "They once boasted of prominent spinners like Saqlain Mushtaq, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, and Mushtaq Ahmed. Shadab initially showed promise, but lately, he's not been at his peak. He doesn't seem keen on taking wickets, and is okay with giving away 50-60 runs without any."
He further commented on the perceived weaknesses in Pakistan's team, observing that their spin department isn't as formidable as before and their batsmen seem vulnerable. The team's underwhelming performance in the 2023 Asia Cup, where they couldn't make it to the finals, was also highlighted.
Harbhajan elaborated, "Their spin department isn't as potent, and their batting lineup appears shaky. Frankly, they seem lost when the ball either swings or spins. You won't always get pitches where you can just confidently strike the ball. Such pitches might be available, but perhaps only in a few venues."
Sharing his predictions for the World Cup, Harbhajan expressed doubts about Pakistan's journey. He believes India, England, and Australia are sure-shot semi-finalists, with the fourth spot being a toss-up between New Zealand and South Africa.
He asserted, "I can't envision them progressing much further. For me, England, India, and Australia are definite contenders. The fourth spot? It's a choice between New Zealand and South Africa. I wouldn't bet on Pakistan for that position."
Pakistan, on the other hand, is aiming to clinch their second World Cup trophy and their first on Indian soil.
