England's frontline pacer Reece Topley was left in extreme frustration after suffering an injury during the ODI World Cup game against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on October 21 (Saturday). Topley sustained the injury when Rassie van der Dussen drove the England seamer's delivery straight down the ground on the fifth ball of the seventh over. Topley tried to stop the ball in his follow-through but his effort went in vain as the ball brushed his fingers and rushed away towards the boundary cushion.
Topley was in visible pain and the England team physio rushed onto the ground immediately. Even after receiving medical attention to his fingers, Topley was in pain and went off the field and Joe Root had to finish his over. Topley, on his way to the dressing room, smashed a chair away while walking up the stairs as he was gutted after another injury setback.
It is important to note that Topley has had battles with injuries regularly. He has missed plenty of time with shoulder, ankle and back injuries in his career so far.
The left-arm seamer gave the Three Lions just the perfect start as he dismissed the in-form Protea opener Quinton de Kock on just the second ball of the match. Overall, Topley has bagged six wickets in this edition of the World Cup in three matches played, including the one against South Africa.
Earlier, England captain Jos Buttler won the all-important toss and elected to field. Buttler made three changes to the playing that featured in the match against Afghanistan. Fit-again Ben Stokes, David Willey and Gus Atkinson were all included in England's playing XI for the crunch match against the Proteas. Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes were dropped from England's playing XI. Aiden Markram took over captaincy duties from Temba Bavuma for South Africa as Reeza Hendricks replaced the skipper.
England Playing XI: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), David Willey, Adil Rashid, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Reece Topley
South Africa Playing XI: Quinton de Kock(w), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram(c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi
