Indian captain Rohit Sharma went berserk in the run chase against Afghanistan. Rohit reached his seventh World Cup century from just 63 balls. It is the fastest century for India in World Cup history. The previous record belonged to former Indian skipper Kapil Dev who took 72 balls. Rohit now holds the record for most centuries in the World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar had scored six World Cup centuries from 44 balls.

This is the seventh-fastest century in the history of the World Cup. It is the sixth-fastest for India in the format. This was Rohit's 31st ODI century. Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (47) are the only two batters ahead of him on the list as he surpassed former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (30).

Earlier, the 36-year-old became the joint-fastest to 1,000 World Cup runs from 19 innings. He went on a six-hitting spree and broke the record for most sixes in international cricket (T20Is, ODIs, and Tests) which belonged to West Indies' Chris Gayle (553 sixes).

Rohit surpassed former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya on the list of most ODI hundreds as an opener. While Tendulkar is on top with 45 centuries, Rohit has 29 followed by Jayasuriya with 28 tons.

Rohit broke another Tendulkar record. He registered the highest score by an Indian batter in a World Cup run chase. Tendulkar had scored 127 not out against Kenya in 1996 World Cup.

Earlier, Rohit took 30 balls to get to his half-century. It is the second-fastest for India at World Cups behind Tendulkar who did it from 26 balls against Bermuda in the 2007 edition of the tournament.

Rohit scored 76 runs in the first 10 overs. He broke Robin Uthappa's record for most runs (70) scored by an Indian batter in the first 10 overs since 2002. He shared a 156-run opening partnership with Ishan Kishan. It is India's fifth-highest opening partnership in the World Cup. Among the top five, Rohit features in four of these partnerships in World Cups.

Rohit's 131 made the run chase look easy. India won the game by eight wickets with 15 overs to spare.
