New Zealand bowl out Uganda for 40, register first win of T20 World Cup 2024 after getting knocked out of Super 8 race

New Zealand registered their first win of T20 World Cup 2024 at Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad. Tim Southee-led bowling attack was lethal as they bowled out Uganda for 40 in 18.4 overs with only one batter managed to score in double digits. New Zealand openers did not finish the run chase with a flurry of boundaries as Finn Allen struggled. The BlackCaps got over the line with nine wickets in hand and 14.4 overs to spare.
 

Uganda crumble against New Zealand

Earlier, Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl first. Trent Boult struck twice in the first over. Simon Ssesazi got out lbw whereas Robisnon Obuya got bowled. After a couple of quiet overs, Tim Southee trapped Alpesh Ramjani in front of the stumps. The three batters departed without scoring a run. Kenneth Waiswa hit the first boundary of the innings in the fifth over. Uganda were nie runs for three wickets after powerplay overs. Mitchell Santner joined the party and got the wicket of Ronak Patel who scored two runs from 20 balls. Waiswa hit another four before getting bowled by Lockie Ferguson. He scored 11 runs from 18 balls. 

Uganda were 21/5 at the halfway stage. Rachin Ravindra joined the party with the wicket of Riazat Ali Shah who scored two runs from 13 balls. Ravindra in his second over ended Dinesh Nakarni's stay at the crease. He scored just four runs from 13 balls. Fred Achelam ended the drought of boundaries in the 16th over. Southee came back into the attack to strike twice. He got Achelam and Juma Miyagi out for lbw. He conceded just four runs from his quota of four overs and bagged three wickets. In the penultimate over, Santner ended Uganda's innings with the wicket of Cosmas Kyewuta. Uganda got bowled out for 40, the second-lowest T20 World Cup score. Interestingly, the record for lowest score of 39 belongs to Uganda alongside Netherlands.

Easy run chase

Devon Conway got off the mark with a boundary in the first over. Allen found the boundary but he played a few too many dot balls. He lost his wicket to Riazat in the fifth over. He scored just nine runs from 17 balls. In the next over, Conway hit Miyagi for two consecutive fours to finish the game. He remained unbeaten for a 15-ball 22. New Zealand will now face Papua New Guinea in their final match of the tournament.
