Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was critical of batting but lauded the bowlers for an exemplary display to beat Pakistan in a low-scoring encounter at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. After Mohammad Rizwan’s catch was dropped by Shivam Dube, Pakistan were 57/1 after 10 overs in the run chase of 120. Rohit in the post-match presentation revealed that he got the team together at the half stage that if they can collapse, Pakistan can face the same fate too.
“Halfway through the stage when they were batting, we got everyone together and said that if it can happen to us, it can happen to them. Little contribution from everyone can make huge difference,” Rohit said after the six-run win over Babar Azam’s side.
Rohit lauded Jasprit Bumrah who won his second 'Player of the match' award in a row. Bumrah bagged three wickets and conceded just 13 runs from his four overs.
“He's going from strength to strength (Bumrah). We all know what he can do. Not going to talk too much about him. Want him to be in that mindset throughout the WC. He's a genius, we all know that,” said the 36-year-old.
Rohit unhappy with collapse
Rohit departed after scoring 13 runs off 12 balls. Pakistan fielders faltered and dropped three catches of Rishabh Pant who made it count and scored 42 runs. India were 82/3 at the halfway stage and lost seven wickets in nine overs for just 37 runs. Understandably, he was unhappy after the collapse of epic proportions.
“We didn't bat well enough. Halfway through our innings we were in good position. We didn't put enough partnership there and fell short with the bat. We spoke about every run matters on a pitch like that. There was enough in the pitch. Was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last game. With a bowling lineup like that you feel confident to do the job,” he said.
Pakistan’s qualification in jeopardy
With two losses from two games, Pakistan have a tough road ahead of them if they want to qualify for the next stage. They don't just need to beat Canada and Ireland but hope that USA don't beat the Irish.
