Bangladesh's veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is one wicket away from creating T20 World Cup history. As Bangladesh face India in a must-win contest at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, Shakib needs one wicket to become first bowler to take 50 wickets in T20 World Cups.
Shakib is one of the few current players who also played in the inaugural edition of T20 World Cup in 2007. The left-arm spinner has taken 49 wickets from 41 games at an average of 19.38 including three four-wicket hauls.
He is by far the leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups and is expected to stay at top until the next edition of the marquee event. Among teams playing in the Super 8 stage, Australia's Adam Zampa is next on the list with 34 wickets from 19 games.
Shakib’s form in T20 World Cup 2024
Shakib has not been consistent either with bat or bowl in the ongoing tournament. He scored an unbeaten 64 against the Netherlands and bagged a couple of wickets against Nepal. Apart from the group stage fixture against Nepal, he hasn't taken a single wicket. Also, he wasn't given the ball in the rain-curtailed Super 8 encounter against Australia in Antigua.
Another milestone for Shakib
Shakib is also two wickets away from completing 150 wickets in T20Is. He will be the second bowler after New Zealand's Tim Southee to achieve the format in T20Is. Southee has 164 wickets from 126 games. Shakib has 148 wickets from 127 games. He is followed by Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan who has 147 wickets from just 90 games.
Shakib has a chance to move up in the list of all-time leading run-scorers in T20Is. He needs more 56 runs to surpass former Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan who has 897 runs from 35 games. The left-handed batter has 842 runs from 41 games at an average of 24.05 including four half-centuries.
India vs Bangladesh head-to-head
Bangladesh have never beaten India in T20 World Cups. They have faced each other in four games. Overall, in T20Is, Bangladesh have one win against India from 13 games.
