The virtual quarterfinal of T20 World Cup 2024 Group 2 sides South Africa and West Indies was interrupted by rain at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. Just when co-hosts West Indies had momentum on their side with Andre Russell dismissing Quinton de Kock, rain played spoilsport.
What will happen if game gets washed out?
If no further play is possible, Aiden Markram-led South Africa will qualify for the semifinals alongside England from Group 2. South Africa have four points with two wins in Super 8 over England and USA. If rain doesn’t stop, South Africa will have five points and finish at the top of Group 2. West Indies will get knocked out of the tournament as they will have three points. West Indies needed a win against South Africa to qualify for last four on the basis of superior net run rate (NRR).
Three more overs to produce a result
West Indies need three more overs to have a chance to qualify for the last four. South Africa were 15/2 after two overs in the run chase of 136 when the game came to a halt. It is not official but South Africa will need to chase down 48 in five overs. They will need 33 runs from next three overs with eight wickets in hand.
West Indies fail to post big score
Earlier, Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision paid dividends straightaway. Marco Jansen dismissed Shai Hope for a golden duck and Markram got rid of in-form Nicholas Pooran. Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase got the innings back on track but struggled to accelerate. They shared an 81-run partnership for the third wicket. Tabraiz Shamsi broke the partnership with Mayers' wicket who scored 35 runs from 34 balls. West Indies suffered a batting collapse in the middle overs. Chase departed for a 42-ball 52. In the slog overs, Russell was run out by Anrich Nortje. West Indies managed to post 135/8 on the board.
