Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India ended their ICC trophy drought with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa to win T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29. Since then, the team has been stuck in Barbados as Hurricane Beryl caused destruction in Caribbean islands. The airport was closed and Team India was stuck in Barbados hotel. But Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has arranged a special chartered plane to get the team back home.
The airport has resumed services and team India is set to fly from Barbados at 4:30 AM local time (2 PM IST) and reach Indira Gandhi International airport at 6 AM IST. Alongside coaching staff, players’ families and BCCI officials, the chartered plane will also carry Indian mediapersons who have been stranded in Barbados as well.
Team India is likely to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the trophy.
Meanwhile, videos of players in team hotel have been making rounds on social media. Virat Kohli gave a glimpse of effects of Hurricane Beryl over video call.
Rohit still feels he is dreaming
Skipper Rohit who realised his dream of winning the World Cup as captain is still trying to come to terms with the reality that India have managed to cross the finish line after a big gap of 11 years. The last time India won the T20 World Cup trophy as in the inaugural edition in 2007. Rohit made his T20I debut on the big stage as MS Dhoni-led India won the trophy.
"Yeah, the feeling is surreal. I would still say it hasn't sunk in totally. It's been a great moment right from when the game got over till now. It feels like a dream we still feel that it hasn't happened. Although it has happened but it feels like it hasn't happened. That's the emotion, that's the meaning that you have," the 36-year-old said in a video posted by BCCI.
