Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach of men’s cricket team came to a satisfying end as India beat South Africa to clinch their second T20 World Cup title. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir is likely to be his successor as head coach when the second string Indian side led by Shubman Gill tours Zimbabwe for the five-T20I series. After India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Roger Binny chose not to reveal whether Gambhir will take over the role or not.
"Nothing concrete has come yet. Gautam Gambhir has a lot of experience. He has worked with teams. He played Test matches, ODIs, T20s. Let's see," Binny said in a media interaction after India ended their ICC trophy drought.
Gambhir appeared for interview in Mumbai with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for the post. The BCCI is likely to announce the new head coach in the first week of July.
Dravid ecstatic after his first senior trophy
Meanwhile, Dravid is happy that he was able to achieve as coach what he could not do as a player. However, he does not consider it as redemption as India won the trophy in West Indies 17 years after the early exit from ODI World Cup 2007.
"Firstly, there is no redemption. I am not one of those guys who thinks about redemption and those kind of things. There are a lot of other players I know who have not been able to win a trophy,” Dravid said after the match.
"I was lucky to be given the opportunity to coach, and I was lucky that this bunch of boys made it possible for me to be able to win a trophy and celebrate.
"Nice feeling, but it's not like I am aiming for some redemption, it's just a job that I was doing. I loved doing the job, I loved working with Rohit and this team. It's been a great journey and I have really enjoyed it."
With Dravid as head coach, India reached the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal, finals of World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 and ODI World Cup 2023.
