Broken, not beaten; Devon Conway attends New Zealand training sessions despite fractured hand

Devon Conway may have got injured in the unluckiest way possible before the T20 World Cup final but he is surely not broken in spirit. Despite a broken hand, Conway was present during training sessions with a bandage on his right hand. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter did not chose to sit in the dugout or fly back home to recover since he has not just been ruled out of the final but the upcoming India tour as well.

The 30-year-old was furious with himself after getting out to England’s part-time off-spinner Liam Livingstone in the semi-final and vented out his frustration by punching the bat. The moment of frustration resulted in him getting injured and ruled out of cricketing action for a long time.

"He's absolutely gutted to be ruled out like this at this time," said New Zealand coach Gary Stead in the media interaction.

"Devon is hugely passionate about playing for the Black Caps and no one is more disappointed at the moment than he is - so we're really trying to rally around him.

"It looked a pretty innocuous reactionary incident on the field, but the blow obviously caught the bat between the glove padding.

"While it's not the smartest thing he's done, there's certainly an element of bad luck in the injury. Devon is a great team man and a very popular member of the side so we're all feeling for him.

"He's determined to support the team in any way he can for the remainder of the tour before he returns home to recover."

At the coin toss Kane Williamson also said that it’s a shame that he was ruled out before the final game and New Zealand had to make a forced change to bring Tim Seifert in his place.
