Two-time T20 World Cup winners West Indies won’t automatically qualify for Super 12 stage of the next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia following their eight-wicket defeat against Australia in their last Super 12 game of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on November 6.
The loss against the Aussies forced them to 10th position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I rankings. As result, Bangladesh climbed to the eighth position in the T2OI rankings automatically.
According to the ICC norms, only the top eight teams and winner of the last World Cup (inclusive or exclusive from top eight rankings) will automatically qualify for the next World Cup’s Super 12 stage. This means hosts Australia, India, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Pakistan and eight-ranked Bangladesh will get in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 by default qualification .
This also means ninth-ranked Sri Lanka alongside West Indies will have to play preliminary rounds in order to proceed to the next stage (Super 12).
The cutoff date for default qualification in the Super 12 stage is November 15. Sri Lanka and West Indies will remain ninth and 10th respectively in the ICC T20I rankings to date. Along with Sri Lanka and West Indies, Namibia and Scotland are the other two teams who will play the qualifiers of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia in October-November.
West Indies will go through a transition phase as their legends Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo who already announced his retirement, will not be a part of their next World Cup campaign. On the other hand, Sri Lanka who managed to make it to the Super 12 after topping the table in the preliminary round also have to groom their players well for the next mega event.
