The International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for a "thorough investigation" after thousands of ticketless fans attempted to get into the stadium for the Super 12 contest between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Friday.
Though 16,000 tickets were issued for the contest, thousands of fans tried to force their way into the stadium. The ICC will “work closely” with authorities to ensure there is no repeat of the occurrence.
“Dubai Police and security staff secured the stadium to ensure the safety of everyone inside and brought in significant additional resources to disperse the crowd and calm the situation," the ICC said in a statement released on Friday.
“At approximately 7 pm (8.30 pm IST), Dubai Police directed that all gates should remain closed and no further entry was permitted to maintain a safe and controlled environment inside the venue."
Mohammad Nabi's fan plea
“The ICC has asked the ECB to undertake a thorough investigation into tonight’s events to learn any lessons and will work closely with authorities to ensure there is no repeat of this situation in the future," the statement said.
After Afghanistan went down fighting against Pakistan and suffered a five-wicket defeat, skipper Mohammad Nabi appealed to the Afghan fans to not repeat the incident.
"For the Afghan fans, please buy a ticket and come to the stadium. Don't repeat this again. This is not good," he said in the post-match presentation.
