Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan became the fastest to 100 T20I wickets reaching the feat in just 53 innings. With the wicket of Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez, Rashid became the fourth bowler to reach triple figures. Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga held the previous record by completing 100 wickets from 76 innings.
Only two other bowlers have 100 or more wickets in the T20I format. New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee reached the three figures after Babar Azam’s wicket in the previous clash. Southee took 82 innings to become the third bowler to achieve the feat. Taking 83 innings, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is slowest to 100 T20I wickets. The left-arm spinner is also the leading wicket-taker in the format with 117 wickets to his name.
Rashid got the wicket of Hafeez in the 15th over of Pakistan’s run chase. Later, he got the wicket of Pakistan skipper in the 17th over. He finished his four-over spell conceding 26 runs and taking two wickets.
Before the start of World Cup 2021, the star leg-spinner needed five wickets to get to 100 wickets. In Afghanistan’s first match of the campaign against Scotland, he took four wickets from 14 deliveries he bowled and conceded just nine runs. His four-fer along with Mujeeb ur Rahman’s record-breaking fifer helped Afghanistan bundle out Scotland for 60 and register a massive 130-run win.
