India’s explosive opener Rohit Sharma became the third batter to complete 3,000 runs in T20Is. Rohit achieved the feat during India’s dead rubber clash against Namibia in their match of the T20 World Cup 2021.
Rohit is the slowest to reach the 3,000-mark in his 108th T20I inning. The only two batters to score more than 3,000 T20I runs are Indian skipper Virat Kohli and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill.
Rohit scored 56 runs from 37 deliveries including seven fours and two sixes. This was his second half-century in the tournament. During his innings, he also went past skipper Kohli to become the leading run-scorer for India in T20 World Cups. He has 847 runs from 30 innings at an average of 38.50 including eight half-centuries. Kohli is just two runs behind him.
The Mumbai batter also holds the record for most centuries in T20Is. He has scored four centuries and 24 half-centuries in his T20I career so far. In T20s (including international, domestic and franchise cricket), he is eighth on the list of leading run-scores in the tournament. Before the Namibia game, he had scored 9,621 runs from 361 games including six centuries and 67 half-centuries.
The 34-year-old is likely to be India’s next T20I captain as skipper Kohli hinted at the toss. Rohit has had a good record captaining the side in T20Is with 15 wins from 19 games and a win percentage of 78.94. His major tournament wins include Nidahas Trophy and T20 Asia Cup 2018. In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, he has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five title wins since he took over the captaincy in 2013.
