Hosts West Indies bounced back from their opening day defeat to romp minnows Scotland by seven wickets in a one-sided affair at Warner Park, St. Kitts in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup 2022. The day also saw sub-continent sides Sri Lanka and Pakistan maintain their unbeaten start by beating Australia and Zimbabwe respectively. With two wins in two group D encounters, Sri Lanka have qualified for the next stage of the tournament.
Scotland brought to the knees by West Indies bowling attack
The Scotland scorecard looked like a phone number as nine players were dismissed for single-digit scores, including three ducks. Oliver Davidson (43 off 93) was the lone man standing for Scotland as the entire team managed to score a mere 95 in 35.1 overs. Shiva Sankar (17/3), Onaje Amory (26/2) and Anderson Mahase (16/2) gave the opposition no chance as the entire team was reduced to a double-figure total. In reply, hosts West Indies did lose three wickets but made sure there was not much panic. They edged Scotland in little less than 20 overs. Shaqkere Parris top-scored with 26 off 29 deliveries. The win sees West Indies open their account whereas for Scotland it is two defeats in a row.
Sri Lanka continue impressive start against Australia
After opening day wins, both Sri Lanka and Australia were determined to go one better and book a place in the next phase. Sri Lanka's decision to bowl first paid dividends as Australia were restricted to 175/10 in their 50 overs. Captain Dunith Wellalage with his left-arm orthodox scalped a fifer as he ended with 28/5. Campbell Kellaway, contributed a big chunk of 54 from 77 deliveries in the Australian innings. Despite initial struggles, Sri Lanka made sure they got over the line in 37 overs ending with 177/6 to win by four wickets. It was the all-around performance of Wellalage as he grabbed attention with 52 off 71 deliveries. Two wins in two have Sri Lanka remain unbeaten while Australia were given a reality check after winning the opening contest against West Indies.
Part time wicketkeeper Haseebullah's ton wins the day for Pakistan
Two-time champions Pakistan started their campaign with a comprehensive 115-run win against Zimbabwe, thanks to a 135-run knock from Haseebullah Khan. The wicketkeeper-batter who considers himself a part-timer behind the wickets, did not hesitate to make his mark with the bat as he smashed 10 fours and four sixes in his innings. Before today's knock Haseebullah had failed miserably in his last five innings. A 75-run knock from Irfan Khan saw Pakistan score 315/9 in their 50 overs. Things didn't start well for Zimbabwe as they were struggling for 82/6 inside the first 20 overs and never looked like putting up a fight against the Men in Green's lethal pace attack. Awais Ali with 56/6 ran riot to break the back of Zimbabwe batting lineup as they only managed to score 200 in 42.4 overs and lost by 115 runs. With a big win, Pakistan go to the top in group C, while Zimbabwe remain second having already won their first match.
