Australia women's cricket team's captain Alyssa Healy stormed into the history book after smashing her seventh ODI century in the Women's World Cup clash against Bangladesh on October 16. This century was her second as captain in Women's World Cup history, making her the Australian with the most centuries in the tournament. Furthermore, Healy's achievement sees her equal former England star Charlotte Edwards for the most centuries in a single edition of the Women's ODI World Cup.
Alyssa Healy's historic century against Bangladesh
Riding on her back-to-back centuries in the ongoing tournament, Healy has grabbed the second spot in the all-time list for most centuries in Women’s ODI World Cup history, alongside Suzie Bates, Janette Brittin, and Charlotte Edwards, all of whom have four centuries. England's Nat Sciver-Brunt currently leads this prestigious list with five centuries.
Batters with most centuries in Women's World Cup:
Player | Number of Hundreds |
Nat Sciver-Brunt | 05 |
Suzie Bates | 04 |
Janette Brittin | 04 |
Charlotte Edwards | 04 |
Alyssa Healy | 04 |
Healy reached her ton in a brisk 73 balls, playing an aggressive and attacking brand of cricket right from the start. Her opening partner, Phoebe Litchfield, provided crucial support, remaining unbeaten with 84 runs off 72 balls. Healy, who finished on 113 not out, led Australia to a commanding 10-wicket victory, securing their place as the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.
Many thought Healy will take away the Player of the Match award, but it was Alana King who was rewarded for her charismatic and miserly performance against Bangladesh. In her full quota of 10 overs, she conceded only 18 runs and picked up the two crucial wickets of Nigar Sultana and Shorna Akter. She also bowled four maiden overs. King's brilliant spell was instrumental in helping Australia restrict Bangladesh to a total of 198 runs in the first innings at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Complementing King's efforts, Annabel Sutherland, Ashleigh Gardner, and Georgia Wareham each chipped in with two wickets apiece. The comprehensive 10-wicket victory will undoubtedly boost the team's confidence heading into the business end of the tournament. Australia's next challenge is scheduled for October 22, when they will take on arch-rivals England at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
