History was scripted at Tinsukia District Sports Association Ground, Kachujan as Assam and Services played the shortest match in Ranji Trophy. The Ranji Trophy clash lashed just 540 balls, seven deliveries less than the previous record, the clash between Delhi and Railways in 1961/62 season. Only 221 runs were scored in that clash, compared to 359 between Assam and Services.
On Day 1, the Riyan Parag-led side was bowled out for 103 with Arjun Sharma taking a hat-trick in his five-wicket haul. Apart from opener Pradyun Saikia's 42-ball 52 and Parag's 31-ball 36, no batter could make a mark. Assam's first innings ended in just 17.2 overs. In addition to Arjun, Mohit Jangra bagged a hat-trick as well.
Never-seen-before in Ranji Trophy
This is the first time in Ranji Trophy's 91-year history that two bowlers have bagged a hat-trick in a single innings of a match. Nearly half a century ago, Services' Joginder Singh Rao had bagged two hat-trick in a single innings.
Assam stun Services to make comeback
In reply, Services could not take a substantial lead. Parag was exceptional with the ball, registering a fifer. Rahul Singh was impressive too with a four-wicket haul, helping his side mop up the tail quickly. For Services, Irfan Khan top-scored with an unbeaten 81-ball 51. They were bowled out for 108 in 29.2 overs.
Another collapse for Assam
There was no fightback in Assam's second innings as well. Arjun claimed four wickets, Amit Shukla claimed three, Pulkit Narang got two whereas Jangra got one wicket. Only three batters crossed the double-digit mark.
No lapses in Services’ run chase
Services batters were better prepared in the run chase of 71. Parag got rid of both openers Shivam Kumar and Jayant Goyat but Services got over the line with eight wickets in hand. Ravi Chauhan finished the game with a flourish, hitting three fours and a six in his unbeaten eight-ball 20.
