After losing the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final, Team India sustained another setback as the International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a 100% fine for maintaining a slow over rate. Champions Australia were also hit with a fine of 80% of their match fees for a similar offense. Upon assessment, the ICC revealed that India were five overs behind the target while the Baggy Greens were four overs short.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” ICC said in a release.

India's opening batter Shubman Gill was also penalised by the cricket's governing body after the young batter took to social media and criticised the umpire's decision.

“India's Shubman Gill will also face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener has been fined 15 percent of his match fee,” the release added.

The Day 4 of the recently-concluded WTC final saw a controversial decision by the third umpire. Indian opener Gill was batting well before Scott Boland forced an outside edge off his bat that was caught by Cameron Green who was standing at the gully. The on-field umpires referred it upstairs and third umpire Richard Kettleborough took his time and gave him out despite the ball touching the ground from various angles.

The controversial dismissal sparked a major outrage on social media as fans, former cricketers and Gill himself were left distraught by the poor piece of umpiring. After Day 4’s play, Gill shared a screenshot of Green holding the ball touching the ground between his two fielders. He did not write anything but used magnifying glass emojis in the tweet.
