Story Highlights:

Shreyas Iyer sustained a rib in lower rib cage while attempting a catch.

Iyer's parents have applied for an urgent visa.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided a medical update on Shreyas Iyer who suffered an injury to his lower rib cage while taking a catch in the third and final ODI of the series against Australia on October 25. Iyer was in ICU in Sydney as it was reported that he had internal bleeding.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” BCCI said in an official statement.

Iyer is currently in hospital and recovering. Team India doctor will remain in Sydney with the ODI vice-captain until he is declared fit to travel back home.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,’ the statement added.

Meanwhile, Sports Tak has learnt that Iyer's parents have applied for a visa on an urgent basis. They will fly to Sydney as soon as possible.

Iyer set for long layoff

The BCCI statement did not mention anything about the timeline of Iyer’s return to the field as he is still recovering in the hospital.

In all likeliness, he is set to miss several weeks of action. He may not feature in the ODI series at home against South Africa starting on November 30. The ODI series against New Zealand starting on January 11, 2026 looks like a more realistic return for the middle-order batter.
