India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer injury suffered a freak injury while taking Alex Carey’s catch in third ODI. As he landed awkwardly, the BCCI medical team rushed him to the hospital after initial examination. He had lacerations to the spleen and was kept in ICU before his condition stabilised. As Iyer is currently recovering in Sydney, India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer talked about the nature of the unfortunate injury. He said that the T20I squad will bring him back home when he recovers.
“Doctors aur physios ne bataaya ki unfortunate tha jo bhi hua toh aisa kabhi hota nahi hai, bahut rare hota hai. Shreyas bhi toh rare hai, toh rare talent ke saath he rare hota hai kabhi kabhi. But theek hai, bhagwan ne saath diya abhi. He is recovering really well. Doctors saath de rahe hain, BCCI is in full support toh jaldi recover ho jayega aur phir saath hi leke jayenge phir usko ghar. (Doctors and physios said it was an unfortunate injury; this is quite rare. Shreyas is also a rare talent. Rare incidents happen with rare talent. But it’s fine, God has been with him and he’s recovering well. BCCI is in full support, and we will take him home alongside)," Suryakumar said in the pre-match press conference in Canberra.
Suryakumar's initial reaction on Iyer's injury
Iyer is out of danger and shifted out of the ICU. Suryakumar shared his initial reaction when Iyer got injured and escorted off the field by team physio.
"Now see, we are not doctors. When we saw from outside, when the catch was taken (by Shreyas), it looked like it was normal," said Yadav.
"But none of us were there, only those who were there can tell what actually happened. So they said after going inside it was felt you will have to pay good attention (to him). Then he was rushed to the specialist, and we were told about what happened.”
Suryakumar also revealed that Iyer has been talking to the players in the T20I squad via phone from hospital in Sydney and there is nothing to worry about.
