India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has left the field midway during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Stadium in Sydney. The 30-year-old batter has hurt himself while taking a lunging catch over his shoulder to remove Alex Carey.
How Shreyas Iyer got injured in 3rd ODI?
The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 34th over, bowled by Harshit Rana, he bowled a short of length outside off delivery, and Carey throws his arms at it - probably trying to go over mid-off/extra cover - and ends up slicing it a long way up in the air. Shreyas turns around and runs back from the backward point, times his jumps perfectly and holds onto it even as the ball slips out a bit. He falls awkwardly to his left side and has injured himself. Fox Sports reported that Iyer's elbow thudded into his ribcage while landing on the deck after taking Alex Carey's catch.
India vs Australia 3rd ODI
Australia have won the toss and opted to bat. India, who already lost the first two ODIs, is off to a good start as Mohammed Siraj gets rid of India's headache Tavis Head in the 10th over. While writing this copy, Australia are 197-5 in 38 overs.
Will any substitute bat in place of Shreyas Iyer?
Well, if Iyer failed to get fit before batting, then no replacement batter will be allowed to bat in his place. Standard substitutes are not permitted to bat or bowl. The rule states that only a nominated player from the team can bat. Suppose a player got hit on the head, then ICC allows a like-for-like replacement.
