Jasprit Bumrah needs 3 more wickets to break all-time T20I record against Australia held by Pakistan spinner
Jasprit Bumrah of India bowls during the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 Super Eight match against Australia at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on June 24, 2024 in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

Story Highlights:

Jasprit Bumrah has 17 T20I wickets against Australia.

Axar Patel is not far behind with 15 T20I wickets against Australia.

India's pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to script history in Australia in the upcoming five-T20I series. Bumrah needs three more wickets to become the top wicket-taker in T20Is against Australia.

The current record belongs to former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal. He had claimed 19 wickets from 11 T20Is at an average of 14.26. The second spot is occupied by four bowlers — Bumrah, Pakistan's Mohammad Amir, New Zealand's Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi.

Axar’s stellar record against Australia

Meanwhile, India's spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel can move up the list as well. The left-arm spinner has 15 wickets from nine T20Is at an average of 13.86. His economy rate of 6.30 runs per over is the lowest among bowlers with 10 or more wickets against Australia in the format.

Earlier, Bumrah was rested for the three-ODI series. In his absence, Mohammed Siraj returned to the side and Harshit Rana played all three games, taking six wickets, most by a bowler in the series.

Suryakumar on Bumrah bowling more in powerplay overs

In the T20 Asia Cup 2025, Bumrah’s majority of overs were not reserved for slog overs. He bowled two-three overs with the new ball. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav believes that stopping Australia in the powerplay overs is going to be a challenge. He lauded Bumrah for taking the responsibility to bowl during fielding restrictions.

“Yes, it’s always a challenge. We’ve seen how they (Australia) played in the ODI series and the T20 World Cup. The PowerPlay is always important,” Suryakumar said at the pre-series press conference in Canberra

“You saw in the Asia Cup — he (Bumrah) took the responsibility of bowling at least two overs in the PowerPlay. It’s great to see him put his hand up and take charge in those crucial moments,” Suryakumar said.

Bumrah’s previous T20I appearance in Australia

This will be the first time since 2018 Bumrah will be playing a T20I on Australian soil. Earlier, he made his T20I debut in 2016 in Australia, taking six wickets in the series.
