Suspense ends over Rohit Sharma's captaincy as BCCI announces India's squad for ODI series against Australia
India's Shubman Gill (L) congratulates his team captain Rohit Sharma after he scored a half-century (50 runs) during the ICC Champions Trophy one-day international (ODI) final cricket match between India and New Zealand

Story Highlights:

India vs Australia ODI series will start from October 19.

Shubman Gill to lead India in ODIs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced India's ODI and T20I squad for the upcoming white ball series against Australia. Team India is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series, followed by a five-match ODI series against Australia, which will start from October 19.

Notably, the BCCI announced Test skipper Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in ODIs and Shreyas Iyer, who was the highest run-getter in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, has been appointed as his deputy for the ODIs.

However, Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, has been named in the 15-member squad announced by the BCCI, which means a gradual shift in leadership without fully sacrificing the experience.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI leg of the tour to manage his workload, while promising left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal has been recalled to the 50-over setup after a string of consistent performances in T20 internationals.

This will be India's first ODI assignment after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where Rohit Sharma-led India defeated New Zealand in the final to win the title at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai.

Why was Shubman Gill appointed as India's captain?

The reason behind the captaincy change is that the selectors wanted Gill to settle down before the ODI World Cup 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Cricinfo quoted that the decision was taken collectively by Agarkar in coordination with India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

"It was a tough call to remove someone from captaincy who has been so very successful. But sometimes we have to take such decisions from the team's perspective, looking at the future" Ajit Agarkar told media.

Notable Omissions and additions in India's squad

Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant missed their spot from the squad due to them still recovering from injuries to their quad and fractured right foot, respectively.

Due to that, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel are in the ODI team, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has been picked and there’s no room for Ravindra Jadeja, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested. Axar will be joined in the bowling department by Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna.
