Story Highlights:

Varun Chakaravarthy will be chasing a massive record in the fifth T20I against Australia

The fifth T20I between India and Australia will be played on November 8

All eyes will be on India's mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy who is on the cusp of notching a massive record in the fifth T20I against Australia, which is slated to be played on November 8 at the Gabba in Brisbane. Chakaravarthy, who currently the Numero Uno in the ICC T20I bowler’s rankings, has an opportunity to cement his place in the history books during the last match of the series.

Varun Chakaravarthy eyes big T20I milestone

The mystery spinner is on the verge of becoming the fastest Indian bowler to reach 50 wickets in T20 Internationals. He currently has 45 wickets to his name from just 28 matches. To break the existing record, Chakaravarthy would need to dismiss at least five Australian batters in this final T20I. The current record is held by Kuldeep Yadav, who achieved his 50th T20I wicket in his 30th match against the West Indies on August 8, 2023. Kuldeep currently has 88 wickets from 49 matches.

Indian bowlers with fastest 50 wickets in T20Is:

PLAYER MATCHES
Kuldeep Yadav 30
Arshdeep Singh 33
Ravi Bishnoi 33
Yuzvendra Chahal 34
Jasprit Bumrah 41

While Chakaravarthy eyes the Indian record, the overall record for the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in T20 Internationals belongs to Dhruvkumar Maisuria of Botswana. Maisuria achieved this major milestone in remarkably quick fashion, reaching the 50-wicket mark in only his 22nd T20I match, a feat that currently stands as the fastest in the world.

Jasprit Bumrah after T20I history

In addition to Varun Chakaravarthy's pursuit of a record, Saturday's final T20I offers another monumental opportunity for Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old fast bowler from Ahmedabad currently has 99 wickets to his name from 79 T20Is. By taking just one more wicket in the fifth match, Bumrah will reach the impressive milestone of 100 T20I wickets.

Achieving this century mark would make Bumrah the first Indian bowler and only the fifth bowler globally to dismiss at least 100 batters in all three formats of the game (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is). He would join an elite club that currently includes Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Bumrah already boasts an exceptional record in the other two formats, with 226 wickets in 50 Tests (where he tops the ICC Test bowler's rankings) and 149 wickets in 89 ODIs.
