The Decision Review System (DRS) has led to a few controversial decision but changed hundreds of decisions over the years which were not fair. However, a captain cannot opt for DRS over third umpire's call which Australian skipper Pat Cummins tried to do on Day 4 of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The incident took place in the third over of Day 4. Cummins bowled a yorker length delivery to Mohammed Siraj. The outside edge went to Steve Smith at second slip. The on-field umpires sent it for review upstairs but the third umpire was quick to rule it not out. Cummins was confused has he stood surrounded by his teammates. He signalled for DRS but the umpires told him that it is not available since the third umpire has taken the decision.
While commentating on the matter, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan took a sly dig at the Australians as he said, "Australia ko lag raha hai ye 2008 hai. Nahi nahi 2008 nahi hai yeh (Australia is thinking that this is 2008. No, this is not 2008)".
Controversial calls during 2007-08 tour
During the 2007-08 tour, there were several decisions that did not go India's way. Andrew Symonds was not given out despite a clear deflection off his bat whereas Yuvraj Singh was when there was none. At one point, Ricky Ponting told the umpire that Sourav Ganguly is out and the catch was taken cleanly at the slip cordon. There were several other decisions which created controversy. Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar who was in the commentary box then criticised the umpiring standards as well.
India all out for 369
It did not take much time for Australia to wrap up India's first innings on Day 4. In the next over, Nathan Lyon got the wicket of centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy. The youngster went for a big shot but could not get to the pitch of the ball. Mithcell Starc took an easy catch at long-off. Reddy departed after scoring a record-breaking 114 off 189 balls featuring 11 fours and a six. On the other end, Siraj remained unbeaten for four runs from 15 balls. India were bowled out for 369. Australia took a lead of 105 runs. Cummins, Scott Boland and Lyon took three wickets each whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out.
