Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rohit Sharma should get back his opener role in the upcoming second Test match against Australia which is scheduled to start from December 6 to 10. Indian captain Rohit missed the first Test match because he was on paternity leave and in his absence, KL Rahul opened India's innings alongside left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and the opening duo dominated Australia with an opening stand of 201 runs in the second innings.
Now, that the Indian skipper joined the squad there are talks on KL Rahul's batting order for the remaining Tests against Australia. In the exclusive conversation with Sports Tak, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said that India should go with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul would come to bat at number six.
"I want Rohit Sharma to come back in the opening because Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal had become a pair. Yes, Rohit was not there, that's why K.L. Rahul returned in the opening" said Gavaskar.
Gavaskar further explained that the square boundaries of Adelaide are very small and Rohit can easily clear the boundary considering his habit of hitting pull shots.
"I want Rohit to come back because the square boundaries of Adelaide are very small. And Rohit has a habit of pulling. Pulling is a very productive shot for him. So he can make a lot of runs by pulling shots. No. 6 is KL Rahul. No. 3 is Shubman Gill. Dhruv Jurel didn't make runs in this (Perth) match. So, instead of him, KL Rahul will come to No. 6. I think these two changes will happen. Will there be any other change? Maybe he will change after seeing the pitch or not" Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
The second Test match between India and Australia is scheduled to start from December 6, 2024. This will be a day-night contest in Adelaide This will be the second match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India are already leading 1-0 in five Test match series of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
