Jaiswal and KL Rahul became first Indian pair to share a double century opening partnership in Australia

India's young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scripted history at Perth Stadium on Day 3 of the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 opener. Jaiswal became the third Indian batter to score a century in his first Test on Australian soil. He joined the elite list of Indian batters including Sunil Gavaskar to score a Test century in their first Test in Australia. Motganhalli Jaisimha was the first to do it with a 101-run knock in Brisbane during 1967-68 tour.

Jaiswal reached his century in style with a maximum off Josh Hazlewood. He played an uppercut in the 62nd over of the innings to reach three figures. The left-handed batter took 205 balls to reach the milestone.

This is Jaiswal's fourth Test century. His first Test century came on debut against West Indies. Earlier this year, he scored double centuries in two consecutive Tests against Ben Stokes-led England. The southpaw crossed the 100-run mark in red-ball cricket after nine months.

Jaiswal lost his wicket to Mitchell Marsh in the second session. He scored 161 runs from 297 balls including 15 fours and three sixes. He fell short of breaking David Warner's record of highest score as an opener at the venue by just four runs. Warner scored 164 against Pakistan in Perth last year.

Jaiswal equals Kohli's feat

Jaiswal is the second Indian batter to score a Test century at Optus Stadium, Perth. Virat Kohli did it in 2018. He scored 123 runs in a losing cause. He is also the third touring batter to score a Test century at the venue. West Indies' Kraigg Brathwaite achieved the feat in 2022.

Jaiswal enters list of legends

Jaiswal is the fifth Indian batter to score four or more Test centuries before turning 23. Sachin Tendulkar had eight Test centuries followed by Ravi Shastri (5), Gavaskar (4) and Vinod Kambli (4). Jaiswal also equalled Tendulkar and Shastri with three Test centuries in a calendar year before turning 23. Only Kambli and Gavaskar are ahead with four Test centuries each in a calendar year.

Jaiswal, Rahul's monumental record

Jaiswal and KL Rahul became the first Indian opening pair to put on a 200-run stand on Australian soil. The previous best for India belonged to Gavaskar and Srikkanth. They shared a 191-run partnership in 1986 at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
