Former Australia coach observed that India captain Rohit Sharma is hinting at his retirement soon. He also said that Rohit looked quite tired on the field during the fourth Test match and was displaying his emotions. The 37-year-old is currently going through a rough patch of his career. He scored 619 runs in his last 26 Test innings at an average of 24.76.
In the ongoing Test series, Rohit managed to score just 31 runs in his three Test outings. After Australia's 184-run win in the fourth Test match, Rohit was seen emotional. Langer reckons that the scarcity of runs is playing with his mind as well.
"Rohit Sharma looks very tired to me. I saw him quite emotional on the field yesterday. That's unusual for us to see Rohit like that. He's usually so calm, so chilled out. But he was showing his emotions; he looks tired" as quoted Hindustan times.
"It's understandable because as a cricketer, when you're not making runs, that's all that stays on your mind. And as captain, if you're not making runs and your team is not winning, the stress starts to come into the game. Whether he can get up for Sydney, that's up to him. It's a big challenge. India need him to get up to speed in Sydney."
Coming back to the fourth Test match, India's top order apart from Yashavi Jaiswal failed to perform again at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne led Australia to a 184-run win. With this win in the Boxing Day Test, Australia are currently leading 2-1 in the five-Test match series and the fifth Test of the ongoing series will take place from January 3 to 7 at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. India who played the last two editions of the World Test Championship (WTC) final need to win the remaining Test to stay in the race for the WTC final scheduled to take place in England next year.
On the other hand, Australia have strengthened their position for the WTC final after defeating India in the fourth Test match. South Africa have already qualified after defeating Pakistan in the first Test.
