Australia's tail wagged a little on Day 2 of third Test as wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey's 88-ball 70 helped Australia post a mammoth total of 445 on the board. India's pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah needed just one wicket as he registered best bowling figures by an Indian bowler at The Gabba, Brisbane. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep took one wicket each as well to bowl out Australia.
Starting the day at 405/7, Bumrah bowled a maiden over to Mitchell Starc. Ravindra Jadeja bowled from the other end and Carey hit him for a four to reach his fifty from 53 balls. Starc took on Jadeja and slog-swept him for a six. In the next over, he hit Bumrah for a boundary as well before edging one to Rishabh Pant. He scored 18 runs from 30 balls.
Carey welcomed Deep with a maximum over extra cover. He came down the track and deposited the ball in the stands. Rain interrupted for a while. Nathan Lyon tried to support Carey but Mohammed Siraj was introduced into the attack and he knocked him over. Lyon scored two runs from 30 balls. Carey took the aerial route again but ended up miscuing the shot. He became Deep's maiden Test wicket on Australian soil. Carey scored 70 runs from 88 balls including seven fours and a couple of sixes.
As soon as Australia's first innings came to an end, the rain returned and caused a delay in the first session.
Head, Smith dominate India
Earlier on Day 2, India took early wickets. But Travis Head launched a brutal counter attack and left captain Rohit Sharma captain clueless. Head scored 152 runs from 160 balls. Smith scored his 10th Test century against India. He departed for 101. It was only with the second new ball India were able to break the 241-run partnership.
