Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel has dissected the unfortunate mix-up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal which saw the latter getting run out on Day 4 of the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG. Parthiv feels Yashasvi Jaiswal was at fault as the run-out was triggered after his unnecessary call for a quick single.

Horrible mix-up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal

Jaiswal was fully set on the crease until the horrible mix-up with Virat Kohli. Jaiswal's wicket then triggered took the momentum away from Indian batters as they subsequently suffered batting collapse.

It all happened in the 41st over, when Jaiswal confidently drove the ball to mid-on and called for a single. However, Kohli hesitated, seemingly uninterested in taking the run as he focused on watching the ball. This miscommunication led to Jaiswal's run-out.

Kohli remained focused on the ball, staying close to the crease while Jaiswal continued to run. Cummins quickly retrieved the ball and attempted a direct hit at the striker's end, but his throw missed the target. Alex Carey quickly collected the ball and completed the run-out, ending Jaiswal's impressive innings at 82 runs. Parthiv Patel talked about the big impact of this run-out on the course of the match. He pointed out that India were in a strong position with both Kohli and Jaiswal batting confidently.

"The way India started the session, the way the game was going on for the last half an hour there were about 25 minutes left till then, India was in full control. Especially the way the runs were coming, the speed with which the runs were coming. Everything was going in India's favour. There was a big question on Virat Kohli related to outside off stump, he was giving a lot of answers," Parthiv said on a Cricbuzz show.

"He was showing a lot of patience, was forcing Australia to bowl at him. Yashasvi Jaiswal was also playing his game. The way he plays his game, he was playing his game but the unfortunate run out from where the whole game changed. The situation changed after that run-out," he added.

Parthiv further attributed the blame for the mix-up to Jaiswal. He reasoned that with the fielder so close, Kohli wouldn't have anticipated Jaiswal's call for a single. Patel also pointed out that even if they had successfully taken the run, there was a significant risk of Kohli being run out at the striker's end. He elaborated:

"If we go to the cricketing fundamentals if the ball is behind you, then the call is of striker, and here the call was of Yashasi Jaiswal, there is no doubt in that. But the mid-on was standing in front of Virat Kohli. So I don't think Virat Kohli was expecting that by hitting here Yashasvi Jaiswal will call for a run. So the mistake I think in my opinion Yashasvi Jaiswal made a mistake; he looked in a hurry.

"There was no need for that. It was such a call. If Virat Kohli had run, then maybe there would have been chances of running out at his end. And the kind of game was going on, the kind of situation that was, there was no need to take that one run because the boundaries were coming easily," Parthiv concluded.

Jaiswal's run-out triggered India's batting collapse at the fag end of the day's play. India ended the day at 164/5 in response to Australia's imposing total of 474. Steve Smith's century had powered Australia to a commanding position. India's innings witnessed a late collapse, losing three wickets quickly after a promising start. Rohit Sharma, opening the innings despite his recent struggles at number six, was dismissed early for 3 runs. Later, Yashasvi Jaiswal (82) and Virat Kohli (36) fell in quick succession, leaving India reeling at 164/5.
