IND vs AUS Test: Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was not convinced with third umpire Sharfuddoula's decision to adjudge Yashasvi Jaiswal out on Day 5 of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Jaiswal was given out caught behind without any conclusive evidence on the snickometer (ultraedge). The third umpire took the decision as he was convinced there was a clear deflection of the bat as Jaiswal attempted to play a pull shot against Pat Cummins.
"This can never be given out. If there is technology, one should use it. You can not make a decision based on what you see and ignore the technology. There could be an optical illusion and we have seen it many times," Gavaskar said while commentating during the third session.
“The ball that they are showing, which swung after passing the batter and going into the keeper's gloves, could be because of late swing."
Gavaskar does not want the decision overturned until and unless there is an 'overwhelming evidence'.
“Umpires must overturn an on-field decision only when there is 'overwhelming evidence' and by no means it was overwhelming. It is a very poor decision,” he concluded.
Ponting's take on Jaiswal's dismissal
Meanwhile, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels that the third umpire took the right decision.
"In my view, that decision was out. The third umpire did make the correct decision in the end," Ponting said in the commentary box.
Jaiswal had an altercation with Travis Head as the latter felt that was a clear deflection visible to the naked eye. Later, he also had a word with the on-field umpires as he was disappointed by the third umpire's decision.
The opener scored 84 runs from 208 balls including eight fours. After his wicket, the tailenders could not put up a fight as India were bowled out for 155 and lost the Test by 184 runs.
