India's stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah's all-round show continues in the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test match against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. On Day 3 of the match, Bumrah did something which left everyone stunned.
Kicking off the Day 3's play, Stokes (25) and England's man of the moment Bairstow added 66 for the sixth wicket before Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah produced a moment of inspiration on the field, taking a diving screamer off Thakur's bowling to dismiss his opposite number.
The dismissal couldn't have come at a more opportune time for India after an attacking field seemed counter-productive as seven boundaries came between overs 33 and 36.
In fact, in a spell of 10 minutes, Stokes was dropped twice, first by Shardul, who couldn't latch on to a skier when the English skipper had shimmied down the track only to mistime it.
The second chance was off the delivery before the dismissal when he flat-batted Shardul straight to Bumrah at mid-off and to everyone's horror, he missed a regulation catch.
But instead of being discreet, Stokes did a repeat act only to find that the Indian skipper holding on to a much tougher chance.
Soon after it Twitter was flooded with reactions, which also saw former India opener Virender Sehwag laud the Indian pacer and the captain.
Talking about the match, Mohammed Siraj picked up four wickets as India bowled out England for 284 runs. While Jonny Bairstow scored a brisk hundred to lead England's fightback, India managed to gain a healthy 132-run first-innings lead. Captain Ben Stokes fell for 25, Bairstow looked in control, hitting an eye-catching fifty featuring regular boundaries. He went on to reach his third ton in four innings during the rain-delayed second session. On the second day, England slumped to 84/5 in 27 overs after a dominating three-wicket haul by Bumrah, who dismissed Alex Lees (6), Zak Crawley (9) and Ollie Pope (10).
Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj took the wicket of Joe Root (31) and Mohammed Shami sent Jack Leach (0) back to the pavilion. Initially, centuries by Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja helped India post a first-innings total of 416 runs. Pant hammered 146 runs off 111 balls, including 19 fours and four sixes. On the other hand, Jadeja slammed 104 runs off 194 deliveries, including 13 fours. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad also conceded the most expensive over in Test cricket history, leaking 35 runs including 29 from Bumrah.
