Veteran India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was among the top performers for India in the batting department against England at Edgbaston. The left-hand batter played a valiant knock of 89 runs and formed a highly important partnership of 203 alongside Shubman Gill as the Men in Blue crossed the 400-run mark for the loss of just six wickets.
Despite, India completely dominating on the second day mainly thanks to Gill's double-hundred and a good bowling display, England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel remained confident that his side can '100 per cent' win the match. After the visitors posted a humongous first-inning total of 587 on the board, they also managed to take three of England's wickets for 72 runs by the end of the day. Both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope lost their wickets for ducks before Zak Crawley departed back to the dugout after scoring 19 runs as England got restricted to 25/3 at one stage.
Akash Deep took two scalps while Mohammed Siraj also chipped in with one as India were clearly the better side on the day. Despite the Three Lions' poor display, Patel remained adamant that the team can forge a comeback and can go on to win the match.
Patel is confident that England can win the match
"100 per cent. I've said this many a time in front of all of you, and you keep laughing at me. But we'll go back in there, and we'll have a quick chat about how the day's gone, and what might look forward for tomorrow," Patel told reporters following the conclusion of Day 2.
Patel also expressed confidence in both Root and Brook getting England into a far better position through their batting and even went on to label them as 'the two greatest batters in the world.'
"I just think we'll find another way to do it. We'll just try to find another way to get over the line. And I think that's the beauty of the team that we have, and the players that we have, and the belief they have in how they want to go and play the game," Patel stated.
"We've got two of the greatest batters in the world at the crease at the moment, and hopefully they'll go back in tomorrow, and they really nestle in, and really question what could be a good day's cricket for England," he added.
In reply, Jadeja showed no marcy and stated that one can talk whatever they want, but in the end, the team needs to perform and take 20 wickets in order to win.
"In a press conference, you can talk whatever you want, that is none of my business. You have to go out there, perform and take those 20 wickets. That is what matters," Jadeja told reporters.
India will be trying to continue their domination on Day 3 and their main objective currently will be to break the partnership between Root and Brook. If Shubman Gill & Co. continue performing well with the ball, there is a good chance that they can even enforce a follow-on on the hosts.
