In Gautam Gambhir's absence, VVS Laxman oversees India's intra-squad game ahead of England Test series but no role defined officially
Former Indian cricketer and current Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman.

Story Highlights:

VVS Laxman has been on tours as head coach before.

Gautam Gambhir flew back home due to a medical emergency.

The Test series will begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.

Centre of Excellence (formerly NCA) head VVS Laxman is currently in England around the Shubman Gill-led team for the last two days. As Gautam Gambhir came back home to be with his ailing mother, Laxman alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar was in attendance for the intra-squad preparatory match in Beckenham.

While Laxman has often gone as head coach with the limited-overs side while Gambhir is busy with the senior team, there is no official word on Laxman's role on the England tour yet.

As per Cricbuzz, they got conflicting reports of Laxman being there in England.

"He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne," said a BCCI source.

"The target is to win in England, and he may have spoken to the coaches and selectors present here, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game. But he holds no official role with this team," the other source said.

"He went to Switzerland and simply stopped by in London to spend time with the boys. It was always part of his plan," another source said.

The report also claims that Laxman was in Switzerland for a conference before heading to England. The 50-year-old is yet to make an official comment as well.

Laxman's batting experience on England soil

Laxman has a vast experience of playing in England conditions. He has played 11 Tests in England and scored 586 runs at an average of 34.47, including five half-centuries. He has played 16 matches for Lancashire in two County seasons. In addition, he has been part of Indian sides playing first-class games against England Lions, County teams and others.

Sarfaraz, Thakur score century

Meanwhile, there have been two substantial contributions with the bat in the intra-squad match. First, Shardul Thakur who isn't part of the Test squad, slammed a 76-ball 101 on Day 2 for India A against India. Then, Thakur scored 122 runs from just 68 deliveries. He has made a strong case for the fast-bowling all-rounder spot. The game was called off by the team management. They will head to Leeds for the first Test which is scheduled to start on June 20.
