Day 2 of the fifth and final Test of the series was filled with heated altercations. Just before the end of day's play, Sai Sudharsan engaged in a verbal spat with England opener Ben Duckett following his unsuccessful DRS call.
The incident took place in the 18th over of India's second innings. England pacer Gus Atkinson bowled from around the wicket and trapped Sudharsan in front of the stumps with a good length delivery. Sudharsan fell down after he was hit on the back leg and the umpire adjudged him out straight away. However, Sudharsan was not convinced and opted for review after talking to his batting partner Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The ball-tracking technology showed that the ball was crashing into the stumps, not just clipping it. As Sudharsan started walking back to the pavilion, Duckett provoked him by saying a few words. The young batter walked up to Duckett and had a few words were exchanged. Then, Harry Brook signalled him to walk off the ground.
Sudharsan departed after scoring 11 runs from 29 balls. He could not make use of the reprieve he got in the slip cordon as Zak Crawley dropped his catch in the 15th over of the innings.
Duckett's altercation with Akash Deep
Earlier in the day, Duckett was involved in another verbal spat. He reverse-swept Akash Deep for a six and told him that "You can't get me out". But, Deep got the better of him as Duckett attempted another sweep that went into wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel's gloves. After the wicket, Deep put an arm around Duckett's shoulder as he made his way back to the dugout.
England's assistant coach Marcus Trescothick said that putting your arm around a batter after dismissing him is unnecessary.
"He didn't really say too much. Strange, really. I don't think you really need to be putting your arm around someone, but nothing was really said, was it? You just don't really see it. We were chatting on the balcony there and I know many good people playing in county cricket would have said something or dug the elbow in, or something like that," Treschothick said in the post-day press conference.
Duckett shared a 92-run opening stand with Crawley. From 38 balls, he scored 43 runs, including five fours and a couple of sixes.
