After going wicket-less in the first session despite a great bowling effort, Mohammed Siraj finally got his reward as he got the big wicket of Jame Smith, who headed back to the dugout after scoring 51 runs. Notably, the Indian pacer had the chance to get the wicketkeeper-batter's wicket in the first session as well, however KL Rahul messed up an easy catch in the slips and the chance went begging.
As Siraj opened his account for the match during the second session of Day 2, he used the moment to pay a tribute to late Portugal and Liverpool footballer, Diogo Jota. As he made the breakthrough, the seamer indicated the number 20 with his fingers. Notably, Jota used to wear the No.20 jersey during his time with Liverpool.
Siraj did a heartfelt gesture for Jota after getting the wicket of Smith
The gesture gained recognition after prominent footballers Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele did it recently. This comes after Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain last week. Wishes and tributes are still pouring in for the Portuguese forward from all around the world.
Meanwhile, Siraj also ended up picking up the wicket of Brydon Carse (56) to bundle out England for 387 runs in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah was once again the star performer for India as he finished the inning with figures of 5/74 in 27 overs. The pace spearhead got the big wickets of Ollie Pope, Joe Root and Ben Stokes before also dismissing two tail-enders in Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer.
This was Bumrah's 15th fifer in Test cricket which saw him leave behind Bishan Singh Bedi and join Ravindra Jadeja in becoming the Indian bowler with the fifth-most five-wicket hauls in the longest format. He is now just one fifer behind from equalling Bhagwath Chandrasekhar's tally on the list and it remains to be seen how he will perform in the second innings.
On the other hand, Root was the top performer for England with his brilliant knock of 104 runs. The batter brought up his 37th century of the format by scoring a boundary on the first delivery of Day 2. Fifties from both Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse were also very important in getting the hosts to the respectable total and now they will be hoping their bowlers to put in a great display as Indian batters take the crease.
