'We had our chances but...': Gutted Shubman Gill blames teammates after India's five-wicket loss in first Test against England
Shubman Gill of India reacts during Day Five of the 1st Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Headingley on June 24, 2025 in Leeds, England.

Story Highlights:

England defeated India by five wickets.

India vs England 2nd Test will start from July 2-6.

India's newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill, has had a forgetful start, and England defeated India in the first Test match of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy at Yorkshire Cricket Ground in Leeds, England. With this win, England managed an early 1-0 lead in the five-Test match series.

After India's humiliating defeat in the first Test against England, skipper Shubman Gill blamed poor fielding and a collapse from the lower order for the team's loss in the opening clash. India's fielding in the opening Test was not up to the mark as the visitors dropped at least seven catches. India's tailenders Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna managed to add five runs to India’s total in the first innings of the first Test, and the pacer quartet added four runs in the second innings on Monday (June 23).

"A brilliant Test, we had our chances. Drop catches, lower not contributing cost us. Yesterday, we were thinking of giving them 430, but our last wickets fell for 25. Even today, I thought we had our chances after the brilliant first wicket. Didn't go to hand. We spoke about the first-innings collapse, which happens, we have to rectify that going forward" said Shubman Gill in post post-match presentation.

Gill also admitted that the old ball benefited the hosts while praising veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for his brilliant bowling.

"Chances don't come easy on wickets like this, but we have a young team. Learning one. Hope to improve that. The first session, we bowled spot-on. Didn't give away runs, but it's hard to stop runs once it gets old. Have to keep taking wickets when the ball got soft. Jadeja bowled brilliantly, created chances, had a pop-up Rishabh didn't see, Happens," added Gill.

While asked about Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the second Test match, Gill said that the team will decide on a game-by-game basis.

"It's decided game-by-game. Once we're close to the next game after a long break, we'll see" Gill also said.

Coming back to the match, Opener Ben Duckett hit the most defining century of his career, exposing an out-of-depth Indian attack as England comfortably chased down a tricky target of 371 to win the opening Test by five wickets after an intriguing five days of play. The second Test match between India and England will be played from July 2-6 at Birmingham.
