Rohit Sharma is yet to click with the bat in the ongoing ODI series against England

Speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma has reached a fever pitch in the buildup to Sunday's third and final ODI against England at Lord's. Rumors circulating earlier in the week suggest that the veteran opener could be wearing the Indian jersey for the absolute last time. Reports indicate that the national selectors have already looked past him for the 2027 ODI World Cup, explicitly informing the 39-year-old that the committee plans to groom youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal as the future of the top order.

These heavy rumors surfaced right alongside Rohit's disappointing outing during the second ODI in Cardiff, where his signature fluid timing completely deserted him. The right-hander labored to a painful 26 runs off 47 deliveries, looking thoroughly uncomfortable against the pace and bounce of Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson. This struggle is part of a broader, recent dry spell for the legendary batter, who also fell for a mere 11 runs in the series opener and has visibly found it difficult to score with his usual consistency.

Morne Morkel backs Rohit Sharma

Despite the intense scrutiny and mounting outside noise, Morne Morkel, at the pre-match press conference, leaped to the former captain's defense during a Saturday press conference. Morkel expressed deep empathy for the opener, pointing out that facing the brand-new ball against a quality English attack has been an incredibly difficult task for batsmen throughout this entire tour. Rather than focusing on the slump, the coach emphasized that a player of Rohit's monumental stature knows exactly how to weather these stormy periods and turn his fortunes around.

Looking ahead to the crucial series finale at Lord's on July 19, Morkel reiterated that Rohit's vast wealth of international experience remains one of the Indian team's greatest assets. The coaching staff firmly believes that the veteran's mere presence at the top of the order provides immense stability and a psychological boost to the rest of the batting unit. Confident that a vintage performance is just around the corner, the camp is fully backing their seasoned leader to silence the critics and anchor the team when it matters most.

“No doubt Rohit will work it out. He has done it in the past. And he just brings that calmness to the batting line-up. So, without a doubt, no worries and concerns at all with the way he is going about things,” Morkel said.

BCCI quashes Rohit's retirement rumours

Amidst the escalating rumors, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stepped in to clear the air, firmly refuting any claims that Rohit Sharma intends to retire following the conclusion of the third ODI against England. In an official conversation with the news agency PTI, Saikia clarified that the veteran batsman remains an integral part of India's plans and will continue representing the nation as long as he fits into the selection committee's ongoing strategies.
