In a series of interesting events, former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has addressed the rumors of Rohit Sharma's retirement after the end of the ongoing England ODI series. While acknowledging that every cricketer wants to retire on a high note, Karthik stressed that the selectors must give priority to the long-term planning and decide whether Rohit remains part of India's roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
Dinesh Karthik reflects on Rohit Sharma's retirement rumors
Rumors around Rohit's future in ODI cricket intensified ahead of India's third and final game against England on Sunday, July 19. A report by The Indian Express suggested that the star opener might not continue in the Indian ODI setup beyond the ongoing series, with the team management reportedly already communicating its future plans to him.

In an interaction with The Scoop by Wisden, Dinesh Karthik was questioned regarding the rumors of Rohit's retirement from international cricket. In response, Karthik admitted that dealing with an established star is never easy and to achieve a happy ending is a difficult task.
“It will need a lot of communication, a lot of clarity, and it's not easy. Then you have the players themselves, who are obviously making a mark with every game they play. In every tournament they go to, they perform so well, and it is not easy to keep them out," said Karthik.
"But having said all of that, there is a way in which some of the seniors will want to finish, and I do wish they are given that opportunity because of what they've achieved for the country. But in saying that, it is not the easiest thing to achieve because sometimes not all fairy tales have a happy ending," added Karthik.
India's one of the best in White-ball formats
It will be interesting to see if Rohit can finish his ODI career on a high-note, as he is one of the best white-ball batters India has ever produced. It would be fair to say that it was Rohit's captaincy that helped India remerge as a powerhouse in the white-ball formats with winning two back-to-back ICC tournaments (T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy).
