After claiming a dominant win over India in the five-game T20I series and climbing to the top of the ICC rankings in the format, England have now prepared themselves for the three-game ODI series starting on Monday, July 14. The ECB has announced the Playing XI for the first game, with Joe Root to make his return to the 50-over side after almost six months. His last ODI appearance came in England's series against Sri Lanka in January 2026.
England have also made a notable change at the top order, with Jacob Bethell set to open the innings with Ben Duckett. Meanwhile, Jos Buttler is set to achieve a big milestone by making his 200th appearance in ODI cricket for England.
Going into the series, the two teams find themselves at opposite end of the ICC Men's ODI rankings. India claim the No.1 position with 121 ratings points, while England sit eighth on the table with 89, marking the gap the hosts aim to reduce in the upcoming assignments.

Big boost for Indian team
Despite the T20I series loss to England, the Indian cricket fans can feel a bit of hopeful as the star duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be back to help the Shubman Gill-led side secure a strong win over the Three Lions in the three-game ODI series. Virat who missed the Afghanistan ODIs due to a hamstring injury, will be feeling hungry to score some big runs against a quality side like England. When it comes to Rohit, the former looked in fine touch when he faced Afghanistan in the third and final clash of the series, as he scored 79 runs off just 69 balls.
England's Playing XI for first ODI vs India:
Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid.
